Ed Bing Lee

ED BING LEE makes artwork using knitted material, its pretty cool, check out his art statement below courtesy of his website and also some images from his "Delectable" series below.

The Picnic series marked my first foray into the world of fiber art. The series dating from the mid 1980's, juxtaposed selected passages from two of George Seurat's monumental paintings, namely Sunday on the Grande Jatte and Bathers at Asnieres, with contemporary food images selected from advertising art. Some 10 years later, I turned again to the food images, visualizing them three dimensionally. However, the transition from earlier pieces to sculptural forms was not an immediate one, I moved gradually through several series, including framed pieces of historical miniatures, bas-relief of Orchids, the Earthcrust series and the current series, titled Meditations on the Chawan.

My initial attraction to the process of knotting was its immediacy and the fact that little specialized equipment is required, which allows for great latitude in approach as to design, concept and technique. In the Picnic series the work is akin to making a tapestry. The image is created by vertical clove hitch over a fixed "warp", guided by a cartoon. I thought the process of creating an image of multicolor knots is not unlike Seurat's pointillism. In three dimensional or sculptural work, the knotting process is most forgiving and the work can progress in many directions simultaneously. The distinction of warp and filling is interchangeable. Shaping is possible in a variety of ways: by adding or dropping ends, by using different tensions, by using different knots or by using a different material. It is in the Chawan series that I sought to revitalize my work habits by revisiting these possibilities.

In the end, I continually return to art history for visual and conceptual stimulation. For me it is the perfect jumping off point for work in a technique that knows no boundaries.

Design Insight: Issue 11 "Pirate"

The pirate, doesn't he look fierce and angry. RAH RAH!

This new range a few designs were left out/forgotten about, I don't think this was one of them though.

Believe it or not, once again it is not all as it seems with the pirate.

Urban Dictionary defines an "Angry Pirate" as:

"The act of recieving oral sex while standing up right, ending with the reciever not only shooting his sperm rocket into one of the giver's eyes, but also kicking the giver in one of his/her shins, thereby hindering the giver with a "peg leg" and a defunct eye."

Another silly gesture, yet the design is quite effective and enjoyable to vision.

Design Insight: Issue 10 "Zombie"

The zombie design began from a simple thought. I feel like doing a design with a zombie and perhaps a gremlin like cousin creature.

And that is exactly what I did, did an obscure head, open the head up, gremlin popping out looking fierce.

I've sort of had trouble explaining the meaning, If there is one, for this design, I feel there should be since all the other designs have some sort of background story, well this one does, but seems to simple and stupid. Really I'd say some of it could be interpreted as how my brain works.

I'm an abstract weird human being, with a wicked creative mentality, perhaps something similar to have wild gremlin creatures running a muck in my brain, fucking shit up.

Another idea was that of something more philosophical and serious. The idea of the NWO, the New World Order, the one world government. We are all brainwashed zombies and the higher empires plan to control our every moment and see every move we play. Something like that. There's plenty of Zeitgeist movement videos about this concept out on the interwebs. Suss them.

Don't be a Zombie, Be a Living Being.

Design Insight: Issue 9 "Toad"

The Toad. Possibly the most popular design I've done from the first range, the look of it, the way it has been printed on a shirt. The filth.

By why the toad?

The toad is an abstract portrait of a friend of mine (Yes not just another innuendo piece cunts), His name is Scott Rogers, known amongst friends as Scotty, Scotty Rogerz, Scotty Fucking Rogerz, Toad, Boot, Padlock, along with other one-off satirical nonsense.

The story of getting the name Toad takes me back to Toolies 2008 (Yes not Schoolies which I attended in 2007). A few of the boys got an apartment on Circle on Cavill for the week, split very cheaply, and basically wrecked havoc and caused ruckus whenever possible.

Amongst the crew was Scott, who infact did not pay a cent to stay for the week. It was one afternoon and we're all most likely hungover right in the middle of the week, Scott is lying on the couch, slothing it up. That's when another friend Hughesie turns and looks at him and says:

"Mate, you look like a fucking toad".

The rest is history. More a less the piece has that side to it, the revelation of getting such an obscure name, the other part is the long friendship I've had with this man, sharing one day apart birthdays in December, He being the reason for my first consumption/demise into alcoholism, amongst other things.

Been through a lot and here's my way in saying Cheers Cunt.

Design Insight: Issue 8 "Taco"

Taco. A delicious mexican dish. To state a funny story that happened recently. I was asked what was the "deal" with all the food designs.

Such an innocent, blessed by ignorance soul child, for it was only a matter of seconds I would ruin the idea of Tacos, Pancakes, and Hot Dog/Chilli Dogs for the rest of time.

It's been the easiest one to open up about, simply cause it isn't as graphic as the others, Taco = Women's Woohoo to quote a studly genius who was interviewed recently.

Design Insight: Issue 7 "Success"

We're all looking for Success, in any sort of given field. Whether it be in the business, romance, creation, fame and fortune.

Success the design shows a dude with two ladies, most men would call that a success. Talks of reversing it for a womens design. A vision is in the works.

What is important with success is happiness, the old cliche money can't buy happiness, I think I can for awhile, eventually it probably turns on you. If you're happy and successful, you're winning, If you're unsuccessful and still happy, you're still winning. Enjoy what you do, who you are, enjoy yourself.

Design Insight: Issue 6 "Pink Stink"

Pink Stink is probably the most simple design I've done so far. Two pink circles and one brown circle. Yet probably has the most open and straight forward meaning than the others.

The shocker is often another name for this, inserting 2 fingers in your partners vagina and 1 in her butt is the way to do it for most people.

We as men try to push the boundaries as much as possible in the bedroom, and to go back to our friends and say I did this and this, is often a satisfying, and telling a story has always been great fun for me.

Design Insight: Issue 5 "Pancake"

Pancake, simple and elegant. Nothing like a nice plate of pancakes in the morning smothered in maple syrup and butter.

The question, which I think is fairly obvious with this piece, is why I signed it Boston?

People by now should discover true hidden meanings of some of these pieces, especially since I've described some of them already. The Boston Pancake.
No idea why it's Boston, whether or not the act originated from Boston, MA or just the fact it rolled off the tongue and sounded good.

Urban Dictionary defines a boston pancake as:

"When a lover defecates on another lovers chest. WITH PERMISSION. Then pats down the feces with his buttox to make it into a flat surface. Then the man ejaculates on the feces which acts as the syrup."

Simply that is the case of a double meaning, although people choosing to stay ignorant and like the idea of pancakes is also a good thing. Like I said, nothing is as it seems.
